Two acronyms show up constantly in fitness apps and nutrition advice — BMR and TDEE — and they're often used loosely as if they mean the same thing. They don't, and mixing them up is a common reason people set calorie targets that don't match reality.
BMR: what your body burns doing nothing
Basal Metabolic Rate is the number of calories your body needs just to stay alive if you did absolutely nothing all day — no walking, no talking, not even sitting up. It covers breathing, circulating blood, maintaining body temperature, and keeping your organs running. The most widely used estimate today is the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, which factors in weight, height, age and sex, since muscle mass (which burns more at rest than fat does) tends to correlate with these.
TDEE: what your body actually burns in a real day
Total Daily Energy Expenditure takes your BMR and adds everything else: walking around, working, exercising, even fidgeting. It's calculated by multiplying BMR by an activity multiplier, typically ranging from around 1.2 for someone who's largely sedentary up to 1.9 or higher for very intensely active people. TDEE is the number that actually matters if you're trying to maintain, lose or gain weight, because it reflects your real total energy use — not the floor number BMR represents.
Why this distinction trips people up
A common mistake is treating BMR as a calorie target. If someone's BMR comes out to 1,450 calories and they eat exactly that, thinking they're being disciplined, they may actually be in a much bigger deficit than intended — because their TDEE, once daily activity is factored in, might be 1,900 or 2,000. Eating at BMR level while ignoring activity is usually eating well below what the body actually needs, which can backfire through fatigue, muscle loss and metabolic slowdown rather than clean fat loss.
How the activity multiplier actually works
The multiplier isn't just about formal workouts — it's meant to capture your whole day:
- Sedentary (~1.2): desk job, little to no structured exercise.
- Lightly active (~1.375): light exercise 1–3 days a week.
- Moderately active (~1.55): moderate exercise 3–5 days a week.
- Very active (~1.725): hard exercise 6–7 days a week.
- Extremely active (~1.9): physically demanding job plus regular training.
These bands are estimates, not precise measurements — actual energy expenditure varies by individual, and the honest answer for most people is that they overestimate their own activity level when picking a category.
Using TDEE to set an actual goal
Once you have a reasonable TDEE estimate, weight goals become a matter of eating relative to that number rather than guessing: eating below TDEE for weight loss, at TDEE for maintenance, or above it for gain. A moderate deficit of around 300–500 calories below TDEE is generally considered a sustainable pace for fat loss, compared to eating near or below BMR, which is harder to sustain and more likely to affect energy levels and muscle mass.
Why two people at the same weight can have different BMR
It's common to see two people who weigh the same and are the same height end up with noticeably different BMR numbers, and the reason usually comes down to body composition rather than anything wrong with the formula. Muscle tissue is metabolically active — it burns calories even at rest, just to maintain itself — while fat tissue burns comparatively little. Two people at an identical weight but different muscle-to-fat ratios will genuinely burn different amounts of energy doing nothing, which is part of why men, who on average carry more muscle mass than women at the same body weight, tend to show a somewhat higher BMR in these formulas, and why the Mifflin-St Jeor equation includes sex as one of its inputs rather than treating everyone the same.
Age plays a similar role from the other direction: metabolic rate tends to decline gradually as people get older, partly because muscle mass naturally decreases with age unless it's actively maintained through resistance training. This is the biological basis for the common (and largely accurate) observation that the same eating habits which maintained someone's weight in their twenties often lead to slow weight gain in their forties, even without any conscious change in diet.
How accurate is the formula, really?
It's worth being upfront about the limits here: the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, like every BMR formula based on weight, height, age and sex, is a population-level estimate, not a direct measurement of your individual metabolism. Studies comparing it against actual measured resting metabolic rate (using indirect calorimetry, where someone breathes into a mask that measures oxygen consumption) generally find it lands within about 10% of the true value for most people — which is good enough to be genuinely useful, but not precise enough to treat the output as an exact figure down to the calorie.
The practical implication is that a BMR or TDEE number is a solid starting estimate to work from, not a fixed target to hit precisely. The better approach is usually to start with the calculated number, track actual weight change over two to three weeks while eating consistently around that target, and adjust up or down based on what really happens — your own body's response is more informative than any formula's estimate, no matter how good the formula is.
